  1. 1912-1956. US painter, a pioneer of Abstract
  2. Expressionism and the foremost exponent of
  3. the technique action painting, a style he
  4. developed around 1946. In the early 1940s
  5. Pollock moved from a vivid Expressionist
  6. style, influenced by Mexican muralists such
  7. as Siqueiros and by Surrealism, towards a
  8. semi-abstract style. The paintings of this
  9. period are colourful and vigorous, using
  10. jumbled signs or symbols like enigmatic
  11. graffiti. He moved on to the more violently
  12. expressive abstract style, placing large
  13. canvases on the studio floor and dripping or
  14. hurling his paint on them. He was soon
  15. recognized as the leading Abstract
  16. Expressionist and continued to develop his
  17. style, producing even larger canvases in the
  18. 1950s.
